Encouraging the holistic development of all children across South Africa

Our mission.

The Amahlanu Initiative is a youth-led effort dedicated to fostering the holistic development of underprivileged children across South Africa. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to explore, learn, and grow in a safe and nurturing environment. By providing diverse experiences that engage all five senses, we aim to help children develop a strong sense of identity, curiosity, and resilience. Our ultimate goal is to empower children to overcome adversity and realize their full potential, creating a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

Every childhood is a story. We often take for granted that we have pictures of our days as toddlers, stories of birthday cake and first words and old paintings; we take for granted the childhood albums, the hours spent discovering and running and scraping knees, and the people in our lives who documented each step of our journey. We believe that the right to develop one’s own story– one’s childhood– through a diverse range of experiences and the right to share and remember it is fundamental for any child, regardless of where and how they grow up.

This is why we offer interactive, multisensory activities which encourage children of all ages to explore both themselves and the world around them. These activities, which cater to all five senses, are organized and led by our dedicated team of volunteers, and our visits are documented by scrapbooks of photos, drawings, and writing, recording the stories of the children we work with.

About our team.

Interacting with the five senses.

Sight.

The sense of sight enables children to observe and interpret the visual world around them. By perceiving colors, shapes, and patterns, they develop their visual acuity and depth perception. Access to classes and experiences that stimulate sight, such as art activities and nature walks, fosters visual cognition, stimulates creativity, and enhances their ability to recognize and remember visual information.

Hearing.

Hearing allows children to perceive and process sounds, including language, music, and environmental cues. It plays a crucial role in language development, communication, and social interaction. Exposure to experiences that stimulate hearing, such as music lessons and listening games, helps children refine their listening skills, develop auditory discrimination, and enhance their ability to communicate effectively.

Taste.

The sense of taste introduces children to the diverse flavors and textures of food. It not only allows them to savor delicious meals but also helps develop their preferences and nutritional awareness. Classes and experiences that stimulate taste, such as cooking classes and tasting sessions, encourage children to explore new foods, develop healthy eating habits, and cultivate an appreciation for different flavors.

Smell.

The sense of smell enables children to perceive and distinguish various odors in their environment. It plays a significant role in memory formation and emotional associations. Classes and experiences that stimulate the sense of smell, such as gardening, nature hikes, and sensory play with scented materials, enhance children's olfactory discrimination, spark curiosity about the natural world, and promote sensory exploration.

Touch.

The sense of touch allows children to explore textures, temperatures, and physical properties of objects through their skin. It is crucial for fine motor skills development, spatial awareness, and body awareness. Classes and experiences that stimulate touch, such as sensory play and tactile art projects, provide opportunities for children to engage in tactile exploration, refine their motor skills, and enhance their understanding of the physical world.

Our projects.

🎈 Balloon 5 Project

The Balloon 5 Project is Amahlanu’s first local outreach project: all it takes is a Balloon 5 Project Kit. Each kit is simple– 5 balloons and an Amahlanu booklet of 5 sensory activities. With a premade kit and the loving guidance of a parent or guardian, babies can engage in sensory activities from their home so significant to their early childhood development.

🎒 Local Outreach

With more than a year of experience with young children of all ages, we have witnessed firsthand the importance of engaging in regular, creative activity in childhood and the changes it brings to young individuals. Our team also offers local outreach initiatives in raising awareness and distributing helpful resources for interactive, creative, and multisensory activities for all children. ❤️ His Heart Ministries

Our ongoing volunteer project has been at His Heart Ministries shelter, where our team has been working with young children ranging from a few months old to toddlers on a variety of creative and interactive multisensory activities for over a year. It started out with just two volunteers each week; now, a year later, we have a team of volunteers who engage with the children and dedicate themselves each week to creating steady, lasting connections with them.

Our Activities.

Take a look at our Activity Guidebook for more information about our activities! We’ve included instructions, materials, useful guiding information and our own personal experience engaging with the children at our partner shelter.

Balloon 5 Activities.

Included in each Balloon 5 Kit is our custom-designed Balloon 5 Pamphlet, complete with a list of 5 Activities that young children can do with their guardian, illustrations, safety guidelines and helpful information about interactive, multisensory activity for childhood development!
